Mayo College’s 150th Anniversary: The CLS Series Deployment

Mayo College’s 150th Anniversary: The CLS Series Deployment

Mayo College, established in 1875 and often regarded as the “Eton of the East”, is one of India’s most exclusive institutions, with a long-standing history of educating royal heirs. To mark its 150th anniversary, the college converted the Loch Ground into a monumental stage where over 650 students delivered a symphonic concert blending Indian musical traditions with Western harmony.

At an event of such institutional significance, reliability and sound quality are paramount. Xion Pro Audio, the firm in charge of the technical design, selected Lynx Pro Audio technology to ensure that every note resonated with the distinction required by this historic anniversary.

The Challenge: Fidelity for a Massive Orchestra

Managing an ensemble of 650 performers with a complex mix of instruments and a vast array of microphones was a definitive test for the system. Mr. Steven, founder of Xion Pro Audio, emphasised that the precision of the equipment was vital in maintaining melodic clarity within a highly difficult technical setup.

Innovation Meeting Prestige: CLS Series

The CLS Series was selected for the primary sound setup, a world-class line developed to meet the most rigorous standards:

  • CLS-212 Line Array: This 3-way symmetrical coaxial line source element, featuring integrated DSP and 6000W of power, ensured uniform coverage and absolute clarity throughout the venue.
  • CLS-218S Subwoofers: Featuring dual 18″ neodymium drivers and 6000W amplification, these units provided the essential depth and control for the orchestra’s rhythmic foundation.

The evolution of coaxial design

The evolution of coaxial design

The coaxial design has proven to be one of the most effective solutions in the history of professional sound reinforcement. Its core technical principle is quite straightforward: to ensure that the different pathways of a loudspeaker (the low and high frequencies) all radiate from the same physical point, thus achieving uniform coverage and a consistent phase response. This arrangement, simple in concept but complex to execute, has fundamentally changed our understanding of acoustic precision and spatial coherence in sound systems.

Origin and development

The initial coaxial systems were introduced for a very practical purpose: to minimise the overall footprint of the equipment and to improve temporal alignment in near-field working environments, such as stage monitoring or recording studios. By emitting all frequencies from a single acoustic axis, the classic phase cancellation issues associated with separate transducers were entirely avoided.

However, the initial designs weren’t without their technical snags. The vibration from the woofer often interfered with the tweeter’s performance, and integrating the high-frequency driver within the cone necessitated very precise waveguide solutions to properly control dispersion and head off unwanted resonances. Overcoming these initial hurdles was the driving force behind the new engineering techniques that ultimately heralded the maturity of the coaxial design.

From trial and error to pinpoint accuracy

The real step change arrived with the introduction of advanced materials, sophisticated acoustic modelling, and highly optimised compression drivers. These enhancements allowed engineers to fully capitalise on the inherent advantages of this configuration, which include:

    • True point source radiation: The entire audio spectrum emanates from a single point, maintaining superb spatial coherence no matter the listener’s position.
    • Precise temporal alignment: All frequency waves reach the listener simultaneously, completely eliminating phase irregularities and improving the transient response.
    • Symmetrical coverage: The carefully controlled dispersion pattern drastically reduces ‘dead zones’ and overlap issues.
    • Compact and neat design: Perfect for installations where space is at a premium or where aesthetic integration is a crucial consideration.

These capabilities have firmly established coaxial systems as a must-have tool in theatres, night clubs, places of worship, fixed installations, and on-stage monitoring anywhere clarity and consistent sound quality are non-negotiable.

Coherence, dependability, and control

Today, the coaxial design benefits enormously from the leaps made in digital signal processing (DSP). The use of DSP with FIR filters allows for minute adjustments to phase, frequency response, and dispersion, maintaining absolute coherence even within highly complex systems.

The CPS series from Lynx Pro Audio serves as a prime example of this evolution. Their design couples high-performance components with a mechanically robust structure and highly refined acoustic control, striking an enviable balance between mechanical reliability and sonic precision. These products are developed with the explicit goal of delivering a coherent, controlled, and utterly stable response in all professional settings.

The current outlook

The coaxial design has evolved from being simply a technical alternative to becoming a recognised industry standard for applications demanding clarity, coherence, and uniform coverage. Its unparalleled ability to deliver an accurate sonic image and a natural response ensures its continued relevance in both compact sound reinforcement setups and high-end fixed installations.

At Lynx Pro Audio, we apply this technology by combining acoustic design and local manufacturing to develop reliable, coherent systems that deliver precise and stable sound in any environment.

To effectively extend the system’s low-frequency response, two BS-118 subwoofers were integrated. Equipped with high-excursion 18-inch drivers, these units deliver depth and stability with a specified extension down to . This provides the necessary sub-bass impact for electronic music without compromising the overall musical clarity and definition.

Operational Integrity

The resulting configuration is a system defined by its reliability, consistency, and resilience. It is engineered to withstand the demanding real-world operating conditions of a coastal beach club: extended duty cycles, high humidity levels, and ambient heat exposure. Furthermore, the system’s aesthetic integration ensures minimal visual interference with the venue’s architecture.

With the technical support of Eltek, Soult Beach Club is now equipped with a professional-grade audio solution that expertly handles the dynamic requirements of live DJ sets and the subtle demands of wellness sessions, guaranteeing clear, stable performance across all operational modes.

Outdoor installation at Hotel Playa Golf, Mallorca

Outdoor installation at Hotel Playa Golf, Mallorca

Designing a reliable sound system for hotel exteriors requires more than just placing weatherproof speakers around a terrace. It involves understanding the real acoustic and operational needs of each area: how the space is used, how sound behaves in open-air environments, and how to ensure consistent performance over time.

At Hotel Playa Golf, a four-star resort facing Playa de Palma, one of Mallorca’s busiest coastal destinations the challenge was clear. With constant outdoor activity during high season and full exposure to sun, humidity, and salty air, this project called for an audio solution tailored for durability, coverage, and seamless integration into the architecture and daily operation of the hotel.

Installing a professional outdoor audio system in a hospitality environment like this means accounting for multiple uses: background music, events, and live sessions, all in open areas with little acoustic control. Standard sound systems aren’t designed for this level of demand. That’s why equipment selection, layout, and signal processing in this project followed strict technical criteria.

To provide background music across pool areas, terraces, and walkways, JUNO-8T loudspeakers were installed. These compact 8” passive speakers include a 100 V line transformer for low-impedance distribution and deliver a 90° x 50° dispersion, 92 dB sensitivity (1 W/1 m). Designed for permanent use outdoors, they feature a treated plywood enclosure, polyurea coating, and IP46-rated weather protection.

In spaces that demand higher SPL, such as event zones or areas with amplified content, HR-208 loudspeakers were added. These passive two-way speakers include an 8” woofer and a 1” compression driver on a constant directivity horn, offering 96 dB sensitivity and 400 W AES power handling. Their polyurea-coated enclosures and corrosion-resistant steel grilles ensure durability even in harsh weather.

Sub-bass reinforcement is handled by HR-18/10 subwoofers. This high-performance subwoofer features an 18″ driver with a 3″ copper voice coil, delivering a frequency response of 46 Hz to 200 Hz (±3 dB) and a sensitivity of 101 dB (1W@1m). Capable of producing a maximum SPL of 135 dB peak, it operates with 1000 W RMS (4000 W peak) power handling. Designed for omnidirectional coverage, it includes an active crossover and 8 Ω nominal impedance.
