The anechoic chamber in the development of professional loudspeakers

The anechoic chamber in the development of professional loudspeakers

In professional loudspeaker design, precision is essential. Critical parameters such as frequency response, distortion, and directivity must be measured under ideal conditions to ensure the system’s acoustic performance aligns precisely with its physical design. This requires a controlled, interference-free environment, making the anechoic chamber an indispensable tool in advanced acoustic R&D.

Cámara-anecóica-Lynx Pro Audio

At Lynx Pro Audio, our anechoic chamber plays a vital role in the development of all sound systems, from initial prototypes to final products. By simulating a reflection-free space, it reveals the loudspeaker’s true acoustic behavior, free from the artifacts introduced by typical room acoustics.

This setup allows us to meticulously analyze key acoustic parameters, including frequency response, sensitivity, on-axis and off-axis behavior, horizontal and vertical dispersion, and overall system efficiency at realistic sound pressure levels. Such data is critical for optimizing both the physical loudspeaker design and its associated digital signal processing (DSP), ensuring each system delivers consistent and predictable performance.

Our in-house anechoic chamber supports accurate free-field measurements starting from 100 Hz, comfortably covering the most relevant frequency range for Lynx Pro Audio systems.

A cornerstone of this facility is our automated robotic measurement system, a computer-controlled 3D arm capable of rotating the loudspeaker across multiple axes. This precision motion enables full 360° polar data acquisition, commonly known as balloon measurements, which are essential for visualizing each model’s acoustic dispersion.

The measurement microphone is positioned with high accuracy using a guided mechanical system, ensuring precise and repeatable placement at every angle. This level of control is crucial for achieving consistent, reproducible measurements across multiple prototypes or test sessions.

All measurement data is seamlessly integrated into our proprietary Rainbow 3D electroacoustic prediction software. By incorporating real-world data from the anechoic chamber, Rainbow 3D can simulate loudspeaker performance in actual venues whether theaters, multipurpose halls, or open outdoor spaces. This alignment between measured and predicted performance provides installers and engineers with the confidence and reliability they need throughout the entire project lifecycle, from system design to final installation.

Having our own anechoic chamber significantly accelerates product development while reducing reliance on external laboratories. This agility enhances everything from validating new designs and calibrating DSP presets to comparing different system configurations. It is particularly beneficial for outdoor applications like line array systems, where control, predictability, and coverage consistency are critical.

A demanding outdoor installation by Sontastic

The installation project, carried out by our technical partner Sontastic, called for a sound system that could provide high-performance audio while maintaining structural integrity under the harshest conditions. The solution came in the form of a fully integrated ecosystem of Lynx Pro Audio products, engineered specifically for outdoor sound system installations.

Strategic selection of Lynx Pro Audio products

The technical approach focused on achieving uniform coverage, high speech intelligibility, and a full frequency response using components designed to perform reliably in challenging environmental conditions.

The system was designed to deliver consistent vocal clarity and even sound distribution across the venue without interfering with the architectural aesthetics of the space. To achieve this, Sontastic integrated three of its most versatile product lines for outdoor applications: the JUNO series, the WCX series, and the HR subwoofers in their MG (Marine Grade) version, all selected for their reliability, durability, and acoustic performance in open-air environments.

Main Coverage: JUNO Series

For the open and semi-covered areas, JUNO loudspeakers in 6” and 8” versions were used. This series is specifically developed for outdoor sound reinforcement. With an IP46 rating and heat-resistant components, JUNO delivers consistent performance even in harsh environmental conditions. Its symmetrical coverage pattern ensures clear sound distribution across wide areas without the need for excessive sound pressure levels.

WCX Series

For areas with more directional needs WCX weather resistant coaxial cabinets were installed. These compact models offer clear and controlled vocal reproduction, reinforcing the sound precisely without interference or disturbance. Their design allows for seamless acoustic and visual integration with the surrounding architecture, which is key for maintaining overall system coherence.

Low-end support: HR-18/10 MG subwoofers

To complete the system, HR-18/10 MG subwoofers were added. Built for outdoor use, these subwoofers feature enclosures, hardware, and electronics designed to withstand humidity, high temperatures, and salt exposure without compromising frequency response linearity.

In open-space audio applications, the goal is not just to produce sound, but to guarantee long-term, consistent performance. It starts with the selection of purpose-built components capable of operating efficiently under extreme conditions, ensuring the durability and integrity of the professional outdoor audio system over time

Outdoor sound systems for beach clubs and terraces

Outdoor sound systems for beach clubs and terraces

During the summer season, venues such as beach clubs, terraces, rooftops or outdoor dining areas require outdoor sound systems specifically designed to operate in demanding conditions. Good-response loudspeakers are not enough: the system must operate stably for hours, with direct exposure to the sun, salt spray, high humidity and sudden temperature changes. In these environments, an installation must be unobtrusive, robust and capable of providing uniform coverage without compromising durability or sound quality.

Professional loudspeakers with weather-resistant version must be constructed of materials resistant to moisture, dust and corrosion. But in addition to physical sealing, it is critical that the acoustic design be optimized for outdoor environments: with controlled directivity, good midrange sensitivity, and performance stability at moderate levels over long days. Lynx Pro Audio offers a number of weather-certified solutions, including the JUNO, HR (MG version) or WCX series all with variants prepared for direct exposure.

JUNO Series: Compact and discreet outdoor sound

The JUNO series represents a compact, discreet and highly efficient solution for fixed outdoor installations. Available in 6 “and 8” models, JUNO combines a lightweight construction with IP46 certification, high-strength polyurea finish and transducers selected for their thermal stability and mechanical resistance. This type of system makes it ideal for restaurant terraces, chill-out areas and installations where visual integration is key.

Juno miniature commercial audio

Installations in terraces, rooftops, and hospitality venues require loudspeakers capable of delivering high sound pressure levels with consistent performance in challenging outdoor environments. The HR series in its Marine Grade (MG) version is specifically designed to meet these demands.

HR MG Series: High performance and Marine-Grade resistance

Solutions such as the HR-218/36 MG subwoofer and the full-range HR-1264/5 MG and HR-1296/5 MG models deliver powerful, high-fidelity sound, making them ideal for long-term outdoor installations where both audio performance and durability are critical.

A common practice in real-world installations is to combine both series. In the Lawn Beach Bar in Bali, for example, JUNO and WCX loudspeakers were used for the wide and discreet coverage areas, complemented by HR MG series subwoofers, thus achieving a balanced system with excellent response across the entire spectrum and without compromising weather resistance.

Another example is the Marina Beach Club in Valencia or the Sundays Beach Club in Bali, where JUNO, WCX and HR loudspeaker systems have been installed, intelligently combining acoustic performance, visual integration and structural strength. These projects demonstrate that with the right technical approach it is possible to maintain consistent sound quality even in demanding environments.

In installations with outdoor sound systems, the acoustic design must be accompanied by a strategic placement of the emission points. The use of a distributed system not only improves the homogeneity of the coverage, but also reduces the disturbance to the environment. The orientation should be aligned with the listening plane, avoiding projecting sound onto reflective surfaces such as glass facades or hard floors. Structurally, the use of specific stainless steel or anodized aluminum hardware is essential to ensure stability against wind, vibration or corrosion.

Operational control and system management

Finally, there is the issue of operational control. In most of these spaces there is no resident technician, so system management must be simple, secure and automatable. The LUKA digital processors allow you to configure the system by zones, set volume limits, apply equalization curves and program on/off schedules. This ensures smooth operation, reduces the risk of overload and keeps the system running reliably throughout opening hours.

Each outdoor sound system project presents unique conditions: from the architecture of the space and the type of use, to the user profile and environmental exposure. There is no standard solution, but there are fundamental principles that apply in each case: the use of systems specifically designed for outdoor environments, a rigorous acoustic design based on technical criteria, and the implementation of high-strength materials that guarantee durability.
